Our office offers Zoom Whitening!

What is Zoom Whitening?

Zoom chairside whitening is an advanced tooth whitening procedure we offer at our Middletown office. It is safe, effective and fast. In only one visit your teeth will become dramatically whiter. The convenience of Zoom is perfect for anyone who wants immediate whiter teeth in just a two hour procedure.

What to expect at your Whitening appointment:

The procedure is very simple. The first thing the dental assistant will do is take an impression of your teeth. This is done so that custom bleaching trays can be made for you to take home to use for touch up whitening.

After the impressions, you will be reclined in the chair and set up with headphones for music or TV listening pleasure. We try to make the 2 hour visit as comfortable as possible.

Patient getting Zoom Advanced WhiteningThe assistant will then create a barrier in your mouth consisting of lip retractors, cotton and liquid dam. This is all created to protect the gum tissue so that only the teeth are exposed. The assistant will then apply the Zoom whitening jell which works in conjunction with the Zoom light to break up stains and discoloration. The gel is applied 4 times at 15 minute intervals. If you cannot go all 4 rounds that is okay, but if we stop early we cannot continue.

At the beginning and end of the procedure we will take a shade of your teeth. This way you can see the difference. There is no way for us to be able to tell you how white your teeth will be at the end. Most Zoom patients see results from 6-8 shades lighter.

After you have completed with Zoom, we recommend that you avoid eating or drinking anything that can stain your teeth for at least 24 hours. Examples of things to avoid would be coffee, red wine, tobacco, ketchup, or any other dark staining substances. By following some simple instructions after whitening is done, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice a day and occasional touch-ups with Zoom take home gel (available at our Middletown office).

Some common questions are:

What is Zoom Tooth Whitening?

Zoom is a bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin.

What Can Cause Tooth Discoloration?

There are many causes. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea or tobacco. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics, or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

Who May Benefit From Tooth Whitening?

Just about anyone can benefit from tooth whitening at our Middletown office. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. Upon an oral exam, Dr. Arrighi, Dr. Wang or Dr. Adkins can determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, including a shade assessment.

Is Tooth Whitening Safe?

Yes, research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any tooth whitening product, Zoom is not recommended for children under 13 years of age and pregnant or lactating women.

How Long Do The Results Last?

By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. We recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, and touch-ups with Zoom home gel. This is a professional formula product designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. It is available through our office.

What Is The Difference Between Over-The-Counter Tooth Whiteners & Zoom?

Consulting Drs. Arrighi, Wang or Adkins is always the first step to whitening your teeth safely. Over-the-counter tooth whitening strips, brush-on gels and toothpastes take weeks or months to whiten your teeth just a few shades. Zoom is clinically proven to whiten your teeth 4-6 shades in two hours.

How Does The Zoom In-Office System Work?

The Zoom light-activated whitening gel’s active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. As hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching any colored substance while keeping the structure of the tooth unchanged. The Zoom light aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth.

Is The Zoom In-Office Procedure Painful?

No. During the procedure, patients can actually watch television or listen to music. Many fall asleep.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Some people experience temporary increased tooth sensitivity to cold during treatment. These symptoms disappear within one to three days after interruption or completion of the treatment.

How Long Is The Procedure?

The entire procedure takes just over one hour. The procedure begins with a preparation period followed by one hour of bleaching. A five-minute fluoride treatment completes the procedure. We recommend a cleaning prior to the actual Zoom! Whitening session.

How Long Does Zoom Take-Home Whitening Take?

The Zoom Take-Home gel is designed to be worn between four and eight hours per application. Drs. Arrighi, Wang or Adkins will advise you on how long you should wear each application. A recent study showed that you can achieve an average improvement of 4-6 shades after just three nights of use. Drs. Arrighi, Wang or Adkins will help you determine how many applications are right for you.

How Is The Zoom! Take-Home System Different From The Zoom In-Office System?

The main difference between the two systems is that you use the Zoom Take-Home System in the convenience of your own home over a few nights. The Zoom In-Office System is performed entirely in our Middletown dental office.
